ONE Championship Announces Featherweight Grand Prix Tournament Plans
Chatri Sityodtong Announces Featherweight Grand Prix Tournament for ONE Championship
Chatri Sityodtong, the chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, has announced that the promotion plans to hold another Featherweight Grand Prix tournament later this year. The news was shared by Sityodtong in an interview with Thai media, a day before the upcoming ONE Friday Fights 58 event, which will feature a matchup between Superbon and Marat Grigorian for the interim Featherweight Kickboxing title.
According to Sityodtong, the current Featherweight Kickboxing champion, Chingiz Allazov, has requested a break and will return to the tournament once he is ready. “Chingiz wants to rest. I and my team talked to his manager and [he said] he wants to rest. When he is back, we will organize a very big Grand Prix. And he will come back,” Sityodtong stated.
The tournament will see Superbon, who is now the interim Featherweight Kickboxing champion, participate alongside the returning Allazov. The two fighters will be placed on opposite ends of the bracket, meaning they could potentially meet in the finals, setting up a rematch of their January 2023 bout, where Allazov brutally knocked out Superbon in the second round.
The winner of the upcoming Grand Prix tournament will earn the Featherweight Kickboxing championship belt and an additional Grand Prix title.
While the details of the tournament, including the other participating fighters and the exact schedule, remain unknown, Sityodtong’s announcement has already generated excitement among kickboxing fans.
Some of the top Featherweight kickboxers in ONE Championship’s roster include Marat Grigorian, Tawanchai PK Saenchai, and Sittichai Sitsongpeenong, who could potentially be part of the upcoming Grand Prix tournament.
